Bribing was a way of life in Okonkwo's time. It is supposed to be proper and everything to butter up the elders and then ask them for a little donation, but in the end it is still bribery. Although Okonkwo has a good reputation already, he brought a kola nut, and what seemed to be like five gallons of wine. Maybe it is harder to say no when you are under the influence. It isn't funny that they use bribery because it is still used today to get money from your parents, but what is funny is how they beat around the bush and call it customs and traditions. However, if they didn't, then it wouldn't be as good a story, which so far is a lot like The Good Earth.
