Page 8

This is a very interesting page because is basically describes the cultural values of the people of Umuofia. After the ancedote about the father of Okonkwo, Unoka, and how he was lazy and a debtor, it is described how Okonkwo was respected unlike his father. It is easy to see from this what the poeple in Things Fall Apart value and prioratize. Okonkwo was respected for being strong, wealthy, and having many wives. It is close in comparison to The Good Earth in that Wang Lung was respected for his women and wealth. Titles are also important to these people wich gives an interesting insight into their political structure. A title gives a man more power and a man dieing without a title is shameful. After observing the values of these people, it is easier to read the book and imagine myself being there.
